Museum of death
The Novosibirsk Museum of the World Funeral Culture is the only museum in Russia dedicated to the study of the origins and traditions of funeral rites, the history of remembrance. Its official opening took place on May 14, 2012 in the territory of the Park of Memory of the Novosibirsk crematorium.
The museum presents a unique collection of original exhibits and copies from the XVIII century up to the modern times, including the following items:
- more than 200 mourning dresses, collections of accessories, jewelry hairdressing products (made of hair), 10,000 paintings, sculptures, lacquer miniatures, enamels, photographs, medals, family values, musical instruments, models of special vehicles;
- historical monuments, icons, crosses, coffins, urns, memorial items.
The museum is notable for its level of visualization. Many aspects of ancient funerary culture are presented in the form of story installations. Identification at an old dissecting room, receiving of an order at the funeral home, sewing of a mourning dress, last respects of relatives for a dead child - all the scenes in the detailed interiors are played out by realistic mannequins, dressed in clothes of the XIX century. This series includes scenes that are absolutely amazing for the modern viewer. For example, a photo studio, where the photographic session post mortem is carried out - shooting of the deceased in a "live" pose and situation, together with relatives. This unusual photo genre, which originated in Victorian England, conquered several countries in Europe, the East coast of the USA and lasted until the late 1920s., leaving quite a large visual legacy. The most expressive of these portraits are presented in the exhibition.
The museum complex is located In the Park of Memory of the Novosibirsk crematorium. A visit to the crematorium can be the final part of the tour upon the request of the audience.
The museum is the member of the European Association of Museums of Death and is included into the UNESCO world heritage program of funeral culture.
