Monument to Victims of Radiation Disasters, Accidents and Nuclear Weapons Tests
The monument to the victims of radiation disasters, accidents and nuclear weapons tests in Narymsky square was opened in 1996 to the 10th anniversary of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station (ChNPS), upon the initiative of the Union "Chernobyl".
The monument is made in the form of a sign of radiation. The years and the place of radiation accidents are graved on the stele: 1949 the city of Semipalatinsk, 1954 the rural locality of Totskoye, 1955 archipelago Novaya Zemlya, 1957 the city of Kyshtym, 1986 the ghost city of Chernobyl.
1,750 Novosibirsk residents took part in the aftermath of the horrific accident at the ChNPP, almost 800 of whom became disabled, and about 500 are no longer alive. Relatives of the fallen gather annually at the monument to commemorate those who, sacrificing their lives, saved the lives of hundreds of others.
