The preceptor of the Ascension Cathedral is the Diocesan Bishop - His Eminence Tikhon, Metropolitan of Novosibirsk and Berdsk.
The first wooden temple in honor of the Ascension of the Lord was built in the city of Novonikolayevsk in 1913. The church was single-altar, wooden. The church was consecrated by Archpriest Nikolai Zavadovsky, Dean of the churches in the city of Novonikolayevsk, on April 6, 1913.
After formation in 1924 of Novonikolayevsk Diocese the chair of the Bishop was placed in the church. With the works of the first Novosibirsk Bishop, i.e. Metropolitan Nikifor (Astashevsky), the chapel in the name of Nicholas the Wonderworker was added to the Church (and was consecrated in 1925).
After the arrest in 1937 of Archbishop Sergius (Vasilkov), the group of clergy and laity, the temple was closed, a granary was arranged in it. The temple was returned to the church in 1944 thanks to the efforts of Archbishop Bartholomew.

The building became completely stone, the inner walls were decorated with paintings, outside mosaics in lunettes over the entrances were placed.
