THE CHAPEL OF ST. NICKOLAS
The chapel was founded on Nikolaevsky Avenue in 1915 in honor of the 300th anniversary of the Romanov House, as a symbol of the capital ambitions of rapidly growing Siberian city. It was built according to the project of A.D. Kryachkov by the whole world: someone gave bricks and iron, someone - money.
In the chapel there was a shrine - an old icon of St. Nicholas and a part of the relics of St. Great Martyr Panteleimon. In 1929, the chapel was blown up and demolished "by the request of the working people", and the holy place was robbed. Later, the sculpture of a hammerer was placed here, then - the monumental figure of Stalin, which was demolished in 1956.
The modern chapel was placed here in 1993 to the centenary of Novosibirsk. Architect P. Chernobrovtsev increased the size and moved the base about 50 m. Today, the icon with a part of the relics of St.Nicholas is kept here.
There is an opinion that the place where the chapel is - the geographical center of modern Russia or the Russian Empire. In fact, the center of the country is in the Krasnoyarsk Krai, and the center of the empire was in the Tyumen region.
