The Novosibirsk Scientific-and-Research Institute for Tuberculosis is the only federal center for fighting against tuberculosis in the Urals, and it was organized on the basis of the order of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR on December 1, 1943.
Activities of the Novosibirsk Scientific-and-Research Institute for Tuberculosis are as follows: scientific, organizational-and-methodological, medical and consulting work, as well as the implementation of the state task on epidemiological monitoring in the Siberian and Far Eastern Federal Districts within the framework of national and international programs on fighting against tuberculosis; these are 21 subjects of the Russian Federation, which occupy 66 % of its territory, and where 18% of the country's population lives.
The Diagnostic center on the basis of Scientific-and-Research Institute is the multidisciplinary laboratory, department for endoscopic, radiation, ultrasound and functional diagnostics. Patients can not only be examined, but also get advice from leading experts such as: pulmonologist, bronchologist, phthisiologist (adult and child), urologist, doctor of laboratory diagnostics.
All units are provided with modern equipment from leading European and Russian manufacturers, which allows performing a wide range of diagnostic tests with high quality and maximum reliability of the results.
The Institute actively and successfully participates in international scientific and epidemiological research, which are implemented with the financial support of intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations and foundations.
Since 2010 Novosibirsk Scientific-and-Research Institute has been cooperating with the Center of the World Public Health Organization (WPHO) to train specialists to fight against multidrug-resistant tuberculosis.
The draft concept for the establishment of the network of national reference laboratories for the diagnosis of tuberculosis in the Russian Federation was presented at the meeting of the Working group of World Public Health Organization on tuberculosis on 11 December 2014. The Federal State Budgetary Institution the Novosibirsk Scientific-and-Research Institute was officially represented as one of three such centres during the Global laboratory initiative partnership forum, which was held in the period from April 27 till May 1 of 2015 at World Public Health Organzation headquarters.
The development of the Center allowed to conduct training seminars for employees of the laboratory service of Siberia and the Far East on the issues of organization of infection control in laboratories dealing with the diagnosis of tuberculosis on the basis of the bacteriological laboratory. The lunch of the new laboratory building allowed to expand the areas of the laboratory, to introduce modern high-tech diagnostic methods, to revise the issues of biological safety of personnel. The laboratory has an area of more than 500 sq.m., it is equipped with autonomous supply-and-exhaust ventilation with air filtration system in accordance with international safety standards for working with the causative agent of tuberculosis. Currently, there are no similar laboratories in the antituberculous service.
The staff of the Novosibirsk Scientific-and-Research Institute for Tuberculosis employs 305 people. As for the researchers and doctors working at the Institute, many are highly respected in Russian and world phthisiology. 8 employees of the Novosibirsk Scientific-and-Research Institute for Tuberculosis have the degree of the Doctor of Medical Sciences, 17 of them have the degree of the Candidate of Sciences, 3 employees were awarded the honorary title "Honored doctor of Russia".
