Ecological trail “St. John's wort”
Many tourists and local historians say that “St. John's wort” trail is the most beautiful place in the Novosibirsk region. And it's hard not to agree with this. From the top of the cliff you can see the magnificent views of Berdi Valley, Rocky Mountains and forests.
No one knows why the mountain was called as “St. John's wort”. Someone supposes that the mountain was named after the medicinal herb of St. John's wort growing on its slopes. Others believe that these rocks were often damaged by cattle, and also because hunters graze the beast here. It's hard to say, but whatever it is, in the whole district this place is known as “St. John's wort”.
Mountain “St. John's wort” is a part of the natural reserve “Legostaevsky”, created in 2000, and represents a unique corner of the nature of the Iskitimsky district. This territory has the richest flora and fauna. The reserve contains 18 species of animals and plants listed in the Red Book, as well as some plants that can be found only in the foothills of the Salair Ridge.
The first in the Novosibirsk region ecological trail has been built along the slopes of Mount St. John's Wort with the initiative of the Novosibirsk region Public Organization “Social Partnership” and Novosibirsk hydro-electric power station with the support of the Commission for Environmental Safety, Environmental Management and Environmental Protection of the Public Chamber of the Novosibirsk Region and the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Novosibirsk Region.
The total length of the ecological trail is 7 kilometers; there is view point at the highest peak of the mountain “St. John's Wort” and the parking lot by the river Berd.
Since the opening of the ecological trail “St. John's wort” in 2015 the route is constantly being modernized. Currently, throughout the route feeding troughs for birds and animals are placed, stumps with mineral salt, which are used not only for large animals, but for hares and squirrels. The new trail is equipped with directional signs (navigation), which allow you not to get lost here for the first visit the trail, as well as show how far from the trail are the major cities and sights of the region.
On the route there are information stands describing the Red Book animals and plants that live in the reserve. On the trail there are recreation places for tourists. Last year the fireplaces were equipped here to ensure the safety of the trail.
